Question re Bushmaster Predator .223
Am interested in hunting coyotes. Anybody know anything about the accuracy and functional reliability of a Bushmaster Predator .223?
I understand that there's about $150 dollars difference between the black and camo models. Is having the camo model worth it? Is there another AR type "field" rifle that's more accurate and dependable? |
Re: Question re Bushmaster Predator .223
For what you are going to use it for, the Predator should be as accurate and reliable as any other AR, practically speaking. As far as camo, the choice is yours. Do you really have the need to camoflage yourself and your rifle?

Thanks. I believe in a camo body but don't think the finish on a firearm is important as long as it doesn't shine and reflect light.

Re: Question re Bushmaster Predator .223
Agreed. AR = AR, unless you get a crappy build. I built a cheap unit in the 90's that easily took squirrels at 100 yards. As for coyotes, I can't really speak for the pursuit. They tend to come to me. As such, I recently moved my lower into an M4gery from Del-Ton and couldn't be happier. In fact, I might suggest you get into a carbine. The ballistics are basically same-same in a handier package should you need it to be used for something else. Overthinking things gets costly. To each his own.
Best of luck, and stay safe. |

Thanks. Will check the carbines out and strongly consider one. I do want a model that has a ramp for a scope base vs. the standard military carry handle/rear sight configuration. ANd any pre-ban is out. I'm way too old for bayonet lugs and such stuff. Besides, I will never let a threat get close enough to me and mine that would call for a bayonet. |

i have a bushmaster varminter and the thing is amazing, I've got a Nikon BDC scope on it and love it.

Re: Question re Bushmaster Predator .223
I have a Bushmaster Varminter and it's OK, it's not as accurate as I think it should be (approximately 1moa), but I haven't really wrung out it's full potential either. Mine has been dead on reliable. It's a 24" tube and that makes a world of difference in velocity vs. a 16".
Overall, I think it'll make a great coyote rifle for you, out to 250, maybe 300 yards, maybe farther if it's not windy. I've never used a painted rifle, and if you decide you need one, a couple cans of Krylon or a camo mesh bag can be had for a lot less than 150 bucks, and you can match the seasons. BTW, most of my coyote hunting is done out of a truck, and I still like the 24". If you're doing a lot of hiking it might be a little heavy, and it doesn't balance very well offhand, but the long heavy sucker settles in nice on a bipod either from prone, across the hood, or "redneck high prone" (lying on the roof of a truck), and is OK out the window or in the "V" of an open door. |
